Umbria enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with generally dry, hot summers and cold winters. Recent winters have been particularly dry. The Apennine mountain range that runs along the region’s north-eastern border with the Marche protects Umbria from the extreme climatic variations that occur in the Adriatic.
Although Cortona enjoys good weather more or less all year round, the best time to visit the city is towards the end of winter (February - March) until late autumn (October).
