Without doubt one of the most precious finds to be unearthed in the 1992 dig carried out at Melone II del Sodo, this buckle comes from the sumptuously adorned, princely Etruscan burial ground situated at the feet of the hill behind the town of Cortona. The buckle itself was found near the drum at the extremity of the dromos leading to the oldest of the tombs, where it was probably dropped by ancient tomb raiders as they were escaping with their loot. Dated at around the 6th century BC, the arched buckle was probably made in Vulci and represents a crouching feline, with an elongated upper section wrought into the shape of the Tree of Life.
